The artwork Nine aims to raise awareness on organ donation in the Sikh community. These were illustrative pieces on the backdrops of nine organs to convey the idea that one can save nine lives.
Death tends to be a sensitive matter so the idea was to concentrate on the idea of service, which is an ideal in the religion. The subject for these illustrations were taken from religious text, famous stories, charitable Sikhs in history. This is accompanied by quotes taken from The Guru Granth Sahib, central holy religious scripture of Sikhism. Using the folk embroidery patterns of Phulkari which is popularly sewn on Punjabi clothing
The idea was to work with colours, design, patterns, imagery that feel familiar to the community, to bring out the positivity of the situation.
The artwork was presented as a pack of nine postcards, that are being distributed in gurdwaras around the UK. It was recreated as a large fabric banner for the Ignite Festival 2023 at Leamington Spa Art Gallery & Museum.
